The Art of Joel Penkman

I discovered Joel Penkman's work through various  blogs before - one of these days I will buy one of his pieces! He is a painter and graphic designer by trade, but specializes in food art. All those childhood staples (at least UK ones), comprise the bulk of his work, and a lot of the types of foods we seem to have an emotional connection with: birthday cakes, popsicles, chocolates.  All pieces are painstakingly hand painted. His larger pieces can be bought on his site, while smaller pieces and prints can be bought from his etsy store.

Fancy Extension Cords

I love the DIY sculptural, braided extension cords project that Design*Sponge had today.

Extension cords for the most part are ugly things that we always trip over as they're always in the way. So with DS's posting as inspiration, I wanted do a round up of cool extension cords and powerstrips that are practical, or not  in the way, or we don't even mind being in the way:

This a thing of beauty, and retracts into the wall when not in use.

I have written before about my love of their axes, but now they have these almost vintage inspired, cloth extension cords. While not cheap, they are at least pretty enough to have out in the open.

Modular Power Strip with Ejector Slots by Soon Mo Kang

This is a concept design - that I hope will go into practice - being that it is a power strip that can be expanded as needed with the purchase of additional cubes. Also, each cube has an icon to let you know what is plugged into it.

While this only has 4 outlets, at least he's cute, and flexible. Good for plugging in all your computer elements, and available in black or white.

DIY Wooden AT AT Power Extension Socket Storage from Brando Toys

While not a power strip, this build yourself AT AT while nicely insulate and hide your unsightly strip and spaghetti of wires.

Plugo Extension Cord from Monos.

Plugo is a great circular extension cord, that has all the outlets to plug into around the circumference of the unit - leaving you with less tangled cords!

This is just scraping the tip of the wired iceberg. While there were others I wanted to include, such as the power hub pig, I thought simple and clean might be the best way to go, for those of us just sick of wires everywhere!

Moss

I don't know if any of you have heard of Moss, but it was an extremely influential design store in NY. Moss might sell a $20,000 couch that not many of us could ever imagine buying, but they did revive Tupperware parties in the late 90's. The would sell amazing furniture that most of us could only gawk at, while at the same time selling small, little doodads that have no purpose whatsoever, but look damn cool on your coffee table. And now, they are closing their store front space in Soho, and repurposing their business as a showroom/consultancy, while still having an online shop.

While many of us are sad that their storefront presence is dwindling down, I am excited to see what their new venture, Moss Bureau, brings. Poppytalk wrote a piece on Moss' closing and new venture, as did the New York Times. For updates, you can also check out Moss' blog, Bloss.

Back to Normal!

Now that things are getting back to what is almost normal, and activities related to the day job are winding thanks to our great success at Sundance (here and here), it's time to get back into a more frequent blogging schedule!
